Downtown Tucson Prospers

The city of Tucson has been taking on several construction projects lately to improve the streets of the city. According to Inside Tucson Business, Scott Stiteler, a Tucson resident and business owner, has formulated a plan to construct a new arts and entertainment district covering three acres at Sixth and Toole avenues. Under a non-profit group named Downtown Tucson Development Company (DTDC), Stiteler and others are trying to work with Museum of Contemporary Art to renovate the building at 197 East Toole and turn it into an artist-in-residence site. Additionally, they want to work with the youth center, Skrappy’s, to modernize the building at 191 East Toole.
Stiteler would also like to work with the city of Tucson to build a park. Finally, he plans to work closely with Warehouse Arts Management Organization on a new three story building. The building would include commercial space for art galleries and cafes on the first level and residential space on the second and third floors. Stiteler has a planned appearance before the city council May 12 to propose his projects.
Nationally acclaimed chef Janos Wilder has announced his return to downtown Tucson after an 11-year absence. His Janos and J-Bar restaurants have been thriving in his absence at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa. In addition to these places, Wilder plans to lease a 2,500 square-foot area in the 200 block of East Congress Street for a few new businesses. The first; his still-unnamed restaurant that will be open for lunch and dinner. Second will be a bar to complement the restaurant and third will be a demonstration kitchen and cooking school.
Tucson residents can expect to see some big changes in the years to come with these projects underway. Smaller-scale changes are currently being made in and around Tucson as well.
The Fourth Avenue underpass of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks that has been reconstructed will open to traffic on August 10.
Renovations of the MacArthur Building located at 345 East Toole Avenue are nearing completion. The building will be the new home to Madden Media.
